Stone Walls
Building with stone is one of man’s oldest occupations, and which came first, the abode or the wall could be the new chicken or egg puzzle. Nonetheless, humans never seem to tire of looking at a stone built structure, which includes walls, patios, walkways, foundations, and driveways.
Here is a sample of stone walls built by Stockbridge Stone. We take pride in the longevity and aesthetics of our stone work. Each project is meant to be admired by more than one generation.
Stone wall history: in New England, a long tradition
Whether it is field stone gathered like farmers still do, or granite dynamited out of hidden quarries, Stockbridge Stone loves turning all this raw material into beautiful structures.Taking what often looks like a pile of rubble to the untrained eye and fitting all these heavy unruly pieces together in a pleasing way is something we enjoy doing.
We can’t create walkways that have footpaths etched in the stone like ancient rivers passing through a stone mountain, but we can create paths that look like they have always been there. And like Medieval churches that are still standing, they need to have solid and well thought out foundations that will survive the winter/spring freeze/thaw cycle.
And even before stones are carefully selected to create a artful pattern, thought has to be given to drainage from everything surrounding a project. A timeless quality is not a thoughtless quality.
Use the Portfolio of Walls above to find ideas that might suit your particular location. There are a lot choices of stone to work with…New England field stone, Goshen stone, Limestone, Chester granite, Bluestone, Berkshire granite; or something more exotic like Getty granite, Chinese granite, Jerusalem stone, or NY alcove stone. And quality pavers can create a handsome outside space.
